Kids Exercises

May 27, 2008

Summer is well on its way and many schools have ended for the current school year. This means that your kids are home!

What better way to spend time with your kids and keep them healthy this summer than to exercise with them. Not adult exercises, though. Kid exercises.

Here are a few ideas for summer-time kids’ exercises:

  • Jump-roping contests: See how many jumps they can do in 30 seconds.
  • Swimming: Not just playing in the pool! If they know how to swim, have them do laps and time them for fun. If they don’t know how to swim, what better time than this summer!
  • Kickball: Baseball is America’s favorite pastime and kickball is one of America’s kids favorite summer activity.
  • Good ole fashioned tag: Get those heart rates up by playing tag. Your kids will run all over the backyard and not even know they’re exercising because they’re having so much fun.

That is the key. Make these exercises fun for your kids. Participate with them. When they see you doing it, they are more willing to join in the fun.

Get Your Kids Off The Couch

May 7, 2008

Too much television watching for your kids may actually be hazardous to their health.  In a study conducted by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the more TV your kids watch, the greater the odds are that they will be sedentary and overweight.

The study conducted by Ross Andersen, Ph.D., surveyed more than 4,000 children ages 8 to 16 about their exercise habits.  The American Council On Exercise reports that, “While approximately 80 percent of the youngsters play or exercise at least three times a week, television prevails among black and Hispanic children. Andersen reports that children who watch the most television are significantly more overweight than those who watch little television. Moreover, boys and girls who report low levels of physical activity and high levels of television watching tended to be the heaviest children.”

What can you do to get your kids to exercise more?  That is a great question and I’m making it one of my missions to help people figure this out.

One of the keys to getting your kids off of the couch and exercising is for you to personally spend time with them and show them that exercise is fun.  When they see you participating in an activity that happens to be exercise they will be more prone to want to join in.  Lead by example.

Try something like biking, skating, skipping rope, basketball or baseball.  For those days where you have to be indoors try something like jumping in place on a solid floor, skipping rope, indoor bowling using a sock ball and even aerobic activities.  Please leave the leg warmers off though!

Try these ideas and let me know how it goes for you.  Give it a few tries.  Be patient.  Have fun!
