Happy Holidays and Kids Indoor Play

December 24, 2008

We at MyFamilyExercise.com want to wish you the best of holiday cheer!  Be safe and have fun!  While you’re at it, don’t forget to participate in some form of kids indoor play the next few days.

Simple, fun games that utilize some sort of ball can get your child a little exercise. Even a little dancing to holiday music would be great cardio fun.

It will be very tempting to sit around on the couch and watch movies all day and night but take just 30 minutes to participate in fun kids indoor play.  You won’t regret it!

Happy Holidays,

The Wise Family

Indoor Games For Kids

December 22, 2008

What kinds of indoor games for kids do you have planned for next week? With low temperatures around the nation, it’s time to take the fun kids activities inside where it’s warm. These games don’t have to be too complicated or take a long time to perform.

The purpose is to have fun, enjoy family time and to use these indoor games as ways to sneak in exercise for your kids.

Try and get creative and combine making a craft that will be used for your indoor game. We’ve told you about scoop ball which you can find here. Here’s an example of an indoor game we do with our four-month-old baby.

Our daughter is already very active and no longer wants to lay on her back all the time. With our assistance, we help her rise from a laying position, to a sitting position and finally to a standing position. She loves seeing the world from this new perspective and it also helps develop her muscle coordination, as well as prepare her for sitting up on her own, crawling and walking.

How do we make this a kids game? By singing songs, making sound effects and counting. Get ready for a whole chapter on fun indoor games for kids! In January we’re giving away a free chapter of our kids exercise e-book to all of our newsletter subscribers. There are dozens of indoor games for kids in the e-book and they’re sure to ask you to play them over and over again.

Here are the benefits of kids indoor play:

• Healthy
• Physical development

Make Kids Home Exercise a Priority This Winter

December 17, 2008

Winter is officially just days away despite frigid temperatures already in place over much of the United States.  Today’s forecasted high in Minot, ND is 6 degrees, 11 degrees in Minneapolis, 22 degrees in Chicago and only 40 degrees in Las Vegas.

For some folks, those temperatures won’t phase them or their kids from playing around in the yard.  But for many people that’s just too cold.  Don’t let the cold deter you from making kids home exercise a priority this winter.

Press through the roadblocks that normally get you down.  Really stress to your children the importance of kids exercise and if you have to do it indoors, then do it indoors.  There are plenty of kids home exercise ideas.  Read our past blogs and read some of our past articles.

What are some of the roadblocks keeping you from modeling for your kids the importance of exercise this winter?

Kids Home Exercise Toy Safety Reviews

December 15, 2008

It isn’t very often that we promote a bunch of Web sites for you to view.  It’s got to be very informative and we have to know that it will help benefit our readers immediately.

It’s the holiday season and parents are still scurrying to get last minute toys for kids home exercise.  I’m sure you’ve heard in the news about the toxic plastics and food that come over from China.  You really need to be aware of that before purchasing toys which are mainly plastic.

HealthyToys.org is working for YOU.  They have tested over 1,500 toys and children’s products and have given them an overall rating.  Included in this rating are test results for cadmium, chlorine, lead, arsenic, bromine and mercury.

I have personally gone through many of these ratings as we’re looking for a healthy kids home exercise toy for our child.  We found several healthy toys that will be perfect for helping develop our baby’s gross motor skills and fine motor skills.

Let’s stay safe and healthy this holiday season and remember that kids home exercise 20-30 minutes a day will help develop your children into healthy young people.  If you need some kids exercise ideas just visit MyFamilyExercise.com.

Should Snow Stop You From Doing Kids Exercise?

December 12, 2008

Let me skip the part where I talk about all the bad, scary drivers on my way to the gym this morning and get right to the heart of the matter.  Snow and ice is on the ground in many areas.  Kids are home on a school day.

Should you guys sit on the couch and watch movies all day while snacking on chips and sugary chocolates?  No way!  What a perfect opportunity for kids exercise activities.  Before you groan and head back for the couch with your kids, let me explain.

I’m talking about FUN kids exercise.  The kind that’s creative, fun and tailored to your child’s specific age.  It is craft time creating your kids exercise activity and then it’s healthy exercise time.

On this snow day, take the time and effort to instill healthy habits in your kids.  It may take 30 minutes to craft the fun exercise and another 20-30 minutes to exercise.  If your child gets bored with the first one, try another one and next week try them all over again.

Get ready because in January we will be releasing a free chapter from our kids exercise e-book to our newsletter subscribers.  Sign up today at MyFamilyExercise.com

Kids’ Rooms Used For Kids’ Exercise, Not T.V.

December 10, 2008

A very simple way parents can make efforts towards lowering their child’s risk of obesity is to keep the television out of the child’s bedroom.

A study has shown that children aged one to five years who have TVs in their bedrooms watch nearly five hours more television and videos each week versus children without TVs in their rooms.  And their conclusion is that those children watching all that TV are more likely to be overweight.

It is recommended that the parent limit their child’s TV usage before age two and to not even entertain the thought of putting a TV in their room.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children’s total media viewing time be limited to one to two hours per day.

Instead of conducting TV viewing in their room, how about some simple kids exercises?  Kids exercise activities can be fun, healthy and help prevent childhood obesity.

Kids Home Exercise Is Affordable

December 8, 2008

Many times when we think of conducting kids home exercises we first think about the cost.  Am I right?  You’re thinking about a treadmill, exercise bike, weights or some other huge piece of exercise equipment.

I have great news for you!  It doesn’t have to cost you anything!  Think of all the items you have around the home such as balls, milk cartons, construction paper, string, jump ropes and other “stuff.”

You can use that free stuff and make them into fun kids exercise games that your children will enjoy.  Some of you have already seen our kids indoor exercise example called “Scoop Ball.”  This particular kids home exercise is listed for kids ages 5 and up.  All you need are empty plastic containers with handles, a soft ball and masking tape.  What your kids get out of it is fun, creativity, athleticism and hand-eye coordination.

We have a whole e-book of kids home exercises to give you ideas, plus we have a free monthly newsletter with helpful kids exercise and nutrition tipsSign up now.  Here is our last email newsletter that went out in December.  Let us know what you think.  We’d love to hear from you.

Exercise Helps Overweight Kids Learn Self-Control

December 5, 2008

Guess what?!  I have another blog for you reporting another kids exercise study!  I hope you’re not bored with these and actually find it useful information.

The new study suggests that overweight children who exercise after school become more fit … duh!  What I did find interesting in the study is that the kids also seemed to be less likely to slam doors, hit other kids or express anger in aggressive ways.

Dr. Catherine L. Davis of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta says, “It may help children control their anger, and that might be because they’re in a better mood because they don’t get angry as much, and it might also be an aspect of self-control.”

I don’t think she’s suggesting that overweight kids are more aggressive than fit kids.  I think her point was that they are maybe more likely to be bullied or to bully others.

Bottom line is that kids need to exercise just like adults need to exercise.  That will never change.
