Kids Need Exercise

January 23, 2009

Does this cold winter season give your kids the blues?  Do the sniffles and light cough give your kids the excuse to skip exercise and just sit around?  You’re either laughing right now or shaking your head.  I’m here to tell you kids need exercise.

Kids need exercise because it’s beneficial to them in many ways.  However, I’ll also explain when the appropriate time is to skip the workout to let the body heal properly.

Kids exercise positively affects their serotonin levels and is recommended for people suffering from depression. Exercise also boosts their immune system, which in turn helps them fight the bugs that cause colds and flus.

Kids need exercise to keep bones and muscles strong and healthy.  Kids need exercise because it will help them sleep better, socialize better, get better grades and increase their confidence.

Ok, so here’s when not to participate in kids exercise:

• Fever
• Pulled or torn muscles/tendons
• Bad chest cold or flu

Basically, if they are experiencing symptoms below their neck – in their chest, lungs or they have an aching body – they need time off.

Kids need exercise and they also need quality sleep, healthy nutrition and plenty of pure water

Stay healthy and as always, feel welcome to leave your comments and ideas here.

Kids Exercise Tips

January 19, 2009

It’s Monday again so here we go!  There are 56 Mondays per year and you can really only react one of two ways.  Oh no, it’s Monday!  Or, ok it’s Monday, let’s get going!

Your challenge is to motivate your kids and I’m going to give you a few kids exercise tips to help.

Have a plan
You’ve got to map out a plan beforehand of what kids exercise activities you’re going to conduct.  It will keep you focused and intentional.

Variety
Mix things up a little each day.  The one thing you want to watch for is boredom with kids exercise.  If you vary things up a bit each day, things will stay fresh.

Encouragement
Encouragement is very important because it can really make a difference as to whether they continue an activity or not for the day.  I’m not talking about saying things like, “Johnny, you are the best child in the whole world ever and you can do nothing wrong!”

Just encourage them in their efforts and encourage them to do the best they can.

Participation
That right parents!  If your kids see you doing the kids exercise with them they are much more excited to join in the activity.  You are your kids’ role model.

Take these kids exercise tips and apply them today.  It’s Monday and there’s no better time to get motivated to keep your family healthy.

Is it Cold Enough For Kids Home Exercise Yet?

January 16, 2009

So it’s freezing cold pretty much everywhere in the United States today.  It’s currently 7 degrees in Nashville, -16 in Chicago and -20 in Minneapolis.  Is it cold enough for you to finally consider kids home exercise?

What a perfect time for it!  If you’ve read this blog before, you know that I’m not talking about sit-ups, pushups and pull-ups while you crack a whip in the background.  I’m talking about creative and fun kids home exercises.

Get the fireplace going and designate 20 minutes for craft time.  Help your kids with ideas and assist them in creating whatever cool kids home exercise activity you came up with.  Then set aside 20 minutes for playing the game.

Your kids will enjoy fun kids games while actually doing kids home exercise.  Neat huh?  As was first offered to only our newsletter subscribers, here is a FREE chapter from our e-book, “Kids Indoor Exercises.”  Read it here.

Don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter at www.myfamilyexercise.com in the upper left-hand corner of the page.

Have a great weekend!

Affordable Kids Exercise Games

January 14, 2009

Don’t let talk about a recession keep you and your family from doing kids exercise games.  Even though we are in a recession and many families are struggling because of job loss or piles of debt, stay focused on keeping your family healthy.

I say “affordable” kids exercise games because there’s virtually dozens and dozens of games you can do at home for FREE.  These games are fun but what your child may not realize is that they are forms of exercise that give many benefits such as:

• Gross motor coordination
• Cardiovascular improvement
• Learning to follow directions
• Acquiring skills for sports
• Fresh and clear mind
• Creativity

Let me say again that you can do these kids exercise games for virtually FREE.  Just think of all the balls, jump ropes and other equipment that you already have.  Did you ever think of using a few socks and some tape to put together a makeshift bowling ball?

Visit our site to find out more ideas on kids exercise games.  Use our site as a resource and email us at any time.

Nutrition in Kids

January 9, 2009

Let’s take a brief step away from kids exercise and talk about nutrition in kids.  I said brief.  I sure hope you haven’t given up already on resolutions for you and your family, especially the ones that involve health.

It’s no problem for me to get motivated to have my family exercise and eat healthy.  I study these topics every day.  However, I also know the busyness of a typical day.  Dad or mom is at work, the kids are in school and at the end of the day you are tired and have to prepare for the next day.

If you get in a rut and ignore exercise and nutrition, you may fall into the trap of eating out or even buying fast food several times a week.  Ouch!  Don’t do that

You are your kids’ heroes, so do your best to do the right things for them.  No pressure, right!  Now is the time to sit down with them to discuss nutrition in kids.  Map out a plan of how you and your kids will eat healthier this year.  This is a very important commitment and it CAN be done.

Let them know that through proper kids nutrition they will enjoy numerous health benefits.  It will even be fun and satisfying if they are able to help you prepare meals using healthy ingredients.

You can do it and rest assure that MyFamilyExercise.com will be there to help educate and motivate you in 2009.  That is our commitment.

New Possibilities and Child Exercise Await

January 7, 2009

New years lead to new resolutions. This time of year brings refreshment and hope, knowing a whole year with new possibilities and child exercise awaits. Any mistakes made the previous year can be undone and self improvement looks promising.

The most common American resolution centers on weight and exercise, which isn’t surprising since at least half of the country is either overweight or obese. Millions of Americans every year attempt to fight the battle against the bulge and improve their health. The best ways to do this is to exercise and change eating habits.

But should your resolution extend beyond self? As a parent, you may see the need for your children to also shape up. If your eating habits are bad, it’s likely theirs are too. If you spend most of your free time in front of the television, do your kids sit right next to you? Instead of saying, “This year I want to lose weight and be healthy,” stretch your goal to say, “This year I want to change my family’s lifestyle so we are all healthy.”

Write down your family’s goals and put them on a mirror or refrigerator for a reminder. Changes don’t have to be drastic, they can be gradual. Gradually incorporate healthier foods in your diet and resist the temptation for fast food and TV dinners. Determine how often you will engage in family physical activities. If your goal is once a week, start planning activities now for the next couple months. Preparing activities in advance will eliminate spur-of-the-moment frustrations.

Can you see the possibilities for 2009?  Having healthy kids is very much possible through child exercise and healthy child nutrition.  What are you waiting for?
