Kids Exercise Through Weight Lifting

February 27, 2009

I’m sure you’ve heard in the past that weight lifting for kids exercise isn’t so effective. Guess what? American children are now lifting weights more than they ever have before. And that’s a good thing!

One Michigan doctor says, “Yes, children are doing strength training now. There are so many benefits to all children. It can train the muscles to act appropriately and efficiently, it can prevent sports-related injuries and can improve sports performance.”

Weight lifting for kids exercise is totally safe. Just make sure that there is adult supervision and see that they are lifting the weights with proper technique.

Sleep and Kids Exercise

February 23, 2009

We have talked a lot about the importance of kids exercise and the numerous benefits that come with it. There are many components to a healthy lifestyle for you and your family and sleep is another one of them.

On the average, infants are sleeping almost 90 minutes less per day than the doctor recommended 14-hour minimum. Toddlers sleep two hours a week less and preschoolers more than four hours less than recommended. It’s not news to you then that your children ages six and up get much less sleep than they should.

Now, in my studies and exercise trials it is a fact that if you exercise everyday you will sleep better and longer at night than those who don’t. It’s no different for kids.

What is causing your kids to sleep less?

• Caffeine
• Lack of kids exercise
• Too much TV and video games
• Late night sugary foods

As you increase a healthy pattern of kids exercise, why not try a good bedtime routine that doesn’t include TV and video games and definitely no sugar or caffeine. Try it out for a month and let us know how it goes.

Games Kids Play

February 16, 2009

There are so many games kids play everyday at the house and most of them seem benign.  Your kids are being very well-behaved as they play video game after video game.  Are they getting in a little Dance Dance Revolution?  Or are they just sitting around being sedentary all night?

What I’d like to see more of in our family lifestyles falls along the lines of physically active games kids play.  And what’s even better is to have the whole family play.

I know, I’m in the same boat as you.  We work all day and sometimes you just want to relax after a long day, especially if you’ve already hit the gym in the morning.  Keep in mind that more and more schools and daycares are cutting out their PE time so the kids aren’t getting much exercise during the day.

Start out by setting aside an hour a couple times a week to devote yourselves to playing fun kids games which incorporate some physical activity.  Depending on the age of your child,(add comma) there are a ton of games kids play indoors in which you all can work on gross motor skills and cardiovascular activities.

Give it a try!  Participate in the fun games kids play.

Exercise With Kids

February 3, 2009

Are you making excuses as to why you can’t exercise?  Are you using your kids as an excuse as to why you can’t?  I’ve got some great news for you!  Why not exercise with kids?

Ah ha!  I know you care about your health and your kids health so why don’t you get yourself motivated to plan out some great kids exercises and participate with them.  You can even turn some of your daily chores into exercises and get your kids to help you out!

How about a laundry relay race where you and your child take turns taking laundry up and down the stairs.  Clean goes down and dirty goes up or visa versa.  Stair climbing can be excellent cardio and leg strength workout.

So why not exercise with kids instead of making excuses everyday?  Trust me, you will enjoy it and you’ll feel great!
